On the 2nd of December the IPCC in cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) held a lecture in Ramallah entitled "Ramallah Urban Development since 1996: Current Reality and Future Perspective".
Opening speech was held by Dr. Michael Bröning, Resident Director of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Jerusalem. He spoke about German-Palestinian cooperation and the German experience of shifting capital from Bonn to Berlin. Prof. Rassem Khamaisi, Head of IPCC Planning Team, presented the Ramallah Master Plan which he has prepared. He explained the spatial and functional relationship between Ramallah, Al-Bireth and Betunia, and the potential for expansion of Ramallah in the north towards Birzeit. Dr. Rami Nasrallah, Founder and Head of IPCC, discussed how Jerusalem has been losing centrality since 1994 while Ramallah is attracting the Palestinian middle and upper classes and economic activities. Dr. Omar Yousef, Head of Planning Unit IPCC, spoke about the concept of urban zoning and the urban intervention tools needed to create integration between Jerusalem, Ramallah and Bethlehem.
26 guests attended the lecture. Prominent guests included the Mayor of Ramallah, Ms. Janet Mikhail; the Deputy Mayor of Ramallah, Mr. Mohammad Abdullah; and the City Engineer Mr. Khalid Ghazal.
