On Friday, the 08th of February 2008, IPCC held its 4th workshop for the "Identity and Land" project. The opening of the workshop was held by Ms. Rula Halayka who gave a short description about how refugees live in camps in Gaza, West bank and Lebanon. Mr. Hamza Qawasmi gave a PowerPoint presentation about refugees in Syria.
Mr. Basher Frashat gave a brief description of the situation of Palestinians from 1948-2008 and the number of settlements that are now placed on Palestinian lands. Then the entire group started discussing the three subjects that where presented in terms of the statistics that were shown and whether they are true or is there more that they don’t know about. They also analyzed how the countries that have refugees are living in and how they are treated politically, economically etc.
Ms. Asma Dwiekat presented a document about the situation of the Palestinian refugees in terms of health, services and education and how they aren't treated as the other people in society.
The group watched a documentary for Mohammad Al-Barky 1948. The documentary presented different characters from refugees talking about their villages that where displaced or destroyed in 1948 and about their personal experiences, their history and memories about what happened with them and their families, friends and neighbors. Also, it presented the testimonies of Israeli officers who were during the war. Mohammad Al-Barky made interviews with all sorts of people, educated people, poets,soldiers,civilians etc.
After the documentary Yahya read two poems for Taha Mohammad Ali from a book called "Sowhat" which talked about two true stories happened in 1948.
The participants talked about their feelings after watching the documentary which were varied between feeling sorry, tensed, and frustrated about the documentary as if they were the ones who lived this period of time.
They also discussed the situation of refugees compared to the activities that can be done to them and the ones that have been already done.
The important factors that they talked about were:
1. The individual narrative of the Palestinian characters turned into a collective narrative.
2. The stories that were mentioned in the documentary meant a lot to them.
3. The women who insisted on holding and keeping her child even though the baby was dead, reminded them the conflict is still there.
4. The collective memories to Palestinians. |
