IPCC - Viable Democratic Palestine Conference
Viable Democratic Palestine Conference

 Viable Democratic Palestine Conference

The International Peace and Cooperation Center and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation hosted a conference entitled "Is a Viable Democratic Palestine Possible?" The conference took place on September 5th and 6th, 2007 at the Grand Park Hotel in Ramallah.

This conference addressed the growing concern that many Palestinians and the international community share about the slowing democratization process- especially since the Hamas takeover of Gaza. This political event gathered academics, politicians and professionals from the public and private sectors to promote internal Palestinian dialogue. Through discussions and debates, the participants tried to set an agenda for a viable democratic Palestine. They identified the barriers, and tried to understand what is essential for building a vibrant and democratic Palestinian state as well as understanding the obstacles that prevent the solidification of sound institutions.

The conference provided a forum for discussing the future of Palestine and the feasibility of a viable democratic Palestinian state. Among the topics discussed were:

Trends and changes in the Palestinian political landscape: political challenges post Gaza events
The two state solution: amid political demand and facts on the ground
Geographic contiguity in the Palestinian areas - RAND model
 The Palestinian development and economy
The Palestinian Reforms, achievements and barriers
Possible and desired scenarios for a viable democratic Palestine

In the two-day conference, participants worked together toward the objective of establishing various potential scenarios for the future of a viable democratic state, including the possibility of failure to implement the democratization process in Palestine. This project aimed at developing a model with the active participation of different sectors of the Palestinian society as to try and diffuse this model in the Palestinian society as a whole. The conference's recommendations and findings will be issued in a publication of the IPCC in a later stage.
